The size is going to depend on 3 key factors:
- Your venue space
- The way you’re going to use it
- Your budget
In this quick article I’m going to show you how to determine the best size of backdrop for your next red carpet event or marketing campaign.
Your Venue Space:
The amount of space you have to work with. You may want to double check with your venue about the ceiling and location space. Typical step and repeat heights are 8′ and 10′ tall, on occasion we have produced 12′ and even 15′ height but that isn’t typical. For most events 8′ tall is standard. For the width it can be pretty much any size the most common for Galas are 8′, 10′ and 12′ width and for movie premieres or awards shows is 15′ and 20′.
When thinking about the width consider how many people will you want to have standing in front of it at one time. for smaller groups like 2-5 people 8′ and 10′ is usually fine. As you increase the number of people per group, you’ll want to increase the width of the backdrop.
The way you’re going to use it:
If it’s just for photos of small groups usually the smaller sizes but if you want it to make a statement as they enter like a red carpet entrance you may want to go longer. When we produce for movie premieres we often are doing 10′ high by 20′ long and sometimes longer because the talent may be walking the red carpet and they want space for media.
Another way is using on stage at conferences or award shows. You may want to measure the size of the stage and have it run the entire width, again take into consideration the height ability of the venue.
Often this ends up being the deciding factor for many. If the budget isn’t there the size is limited. This is where 8′ and 10′ step and repeats end up being most common.
Here’s a couple ways to save on budget:
- Consider having the backdrop as a premium for sponsors. Have them give an increased donation amount to be on the backdrop.
- Could you reuse it for future events or marketing? With our expand tool free hardware you can actually just have a new fabric print made and reuse the hardware that you have purchased for other events. Often this is the best bet to save on it over time
If this backdrop is meant to create an impact at your next event, gala, or marketing activation you’re going to want it to stand out. Sometimes investing a few extra dollars to have that much more of a memorable impact at the event is worth it.
Most often people are sharing their photos of the step and repeats on social media which means your event will get more traction online. Create an experience people will want to share because in the long run it may have that much more positive impact on your event, brand or cause.
